water treatment systems AQUA PLUS® models

OPERATION MODE

The pressure booster module provides the permanent water pressure, which is necessary for the function of water treatment, independent from the conditions at the inlet. The input pressure for AQUA PLUS® STANDARD will be regulated to 3 [bar].
The following pressure reduction valve of the combination device (pressure reduction - prefilter - oxygen generator) regulates pressure precisely, dependent on kind and quality of water. The nominal adjustment for AQUA PLUS® STANDARD is 2,5 - 4 [bar]. This generally ensures an adequate dwell time of water in the treatment process at max. throughput V = 1.200 respect 2.500 [l/h].
Next unit is the prefilter (can be back flushed) with a mesh aperture of 100 [µ] that keeps fines, mud and silt from entering in the system. If using water from rivers and lakes with strongly fluctuant levels of pollution, a suitable filter before the inlet is recommended. Nevertheless the internal filter has to be flushed at scheduled maintenance.
The subsequent oxygen generator disassociates water to a small extent by an electrochemical process. The electrodes receive 200 [mA] at 6 [V DC]. This is a nominal value which can be varied depending on the degree of water pollution up to 200 - 3.000 [mA].
On the anode "radical" oxygen ions are released wet oxidation of organic material in water, cracking and modification of complex chemical compounds. The hydrogen ions released on the anode have redox effect, which reduces oxides, especially NOx compounds.
The water enriched with oxygen and hydrogen ions flows into the activated carbon reactor, consisting of four containers in cascade. The activated carbon adsorbs organic pollutants, as carbon compounds etc., metals, esp. Heavy metals. A permanent catalytic reaction takes place, decomposing carbon and nitrogen compounds. Final products are CO2, N2², H2O, metal oxides, salts and minerals. By permanent presence of oxygen the lifetime of the active surface of the carbon filter will be increased.
Back flushing of the reactor bed in AQUA PLUS STANDARD is not recommended, because only filter residues are flushed back, but none of adsorbed substances that determine the lifetime of the activated carbon.
The following textile filter with a mesh aperture of 1 [µ] prevents carbon particles from entering the piping downstream.
The cleaned and unpolluted water flows through the UVC sterilizer, provided as additional step for safety.
The electronic control unit with sensors activates an UVC-lamp (l = 254 [nm]) for preventative and additional disinfections. The intensity of the irradiation is designed for max. mass flow and water velocity. Uniform flow and uniformly distributed UVC-irradiation are guaranteed by an special patented coaxial tube construction. This ensures germ-free water (up to 99,99%) at the outlet of the UVC-sterilizer ABOX® VARY. The sensors measure irradiation intensity directly at the lamp and after passing tubes and water. Decrease of lamp power or turbidity are registered and the plant is shut down in case of failures.
The following armatures serve for control and supervision of the plant and accounting purposes.

CERTIFICATION AND PATENTS

Excerpt TÜV-report an die Firma A.C.S. - Aqua-Care-Systems GmbH TÜV-Registratur: 8141/143/04: function control of AQUA PLUS®water treatment plant

Testing programme, consultation and guidance during the testing phase

The quality of water can vary greatly, depending on the pumping or flow-in zones and subsequent insufficient treatment. Heavy metals, arsenic and live germs as well as HC-agents can be introduced and exceed the critical values set by drinking water regulations. Although requirements vary greatly, thorough testing to evaluate water treatment plants for an appropriate time period is essential.
Tested Substances, Carbohydrate and Phenol Test
Phenol, MG 94,11 g/mol. Sufficiently dissolves in water with 93.000 mg per litre. Based on drinking water regulations, it is possible to charge one litre of phenol-saturated water to 1000 m³ water, two hundred times the authorised value. With the overload as high as 100 ppb (limit 0,55 ppb) a charge of the activated carbon with 10k/kg is possible, i.d. after 1000 m³ there should not yet be any strain in the plant caused by phenol.
Heavy Metal charging based on the example of Nickel
Nickel in excess of 50 µg/l may not be present in drinking water. In order to determine the heavy metal capacity, raising the critical value for drinking water five times should be sufficient. For 1000 m³ that means about 250 g Ni-additives. Used for the additives should be NiSO4 * 6 H2O, MG 262,85, Ni-portion 22,3 weight percent, dissolution in water 652/l water.
Arsenic Charge
Drinking water may not be charged with arsenic in excess of 10 µg/l. In order to determine the arsenic retention, a fivefold raise of the critical values for drinking water should also be sufficient. For 1000 m³ that means about 50 g As-additives. The known arsenic trioxide (AS203) dissolves moderately with approx. 30g/l in water. However, that is sufficient for contamination.
Addition of live germs, critical values and their meaning
Drinking water regulatory agencies base their quality requirements on water which in general originates from deep within the earth and is, after sufficient filtration, considered to be ground water. Drinking water must be free of any agents causing diseases. This is indirectly proven if Escheria coli, coliform germs and fecal sreptococci, resp. sulfate reducing spore-forming anaerobes, are not present in the water. Accepted are bacterial counts consisting of less than 100 colony-forming elements during 20°C and 36 °C, resp. a 12-hour breeding period.
For this reason, the addition of live germs for model purposes is extremely critical. The sample should contain few nutrients, be well refrigerated and renewed at regulated, even time intervals. A steady supply of water originating from rivers or other near-surface sources is presently preferred for testing, however, would most likely be subject to too many variations (temporary fecal entry, rain periods, etc.) to bring about long-term reliable results. For this reason, it should again be attempted to add a dosage of approx. 106 germs per ml from a receiver, in collaboration with a sewage-treatment plant. In order to receive a 10fold overload, dilution can add up to 1 ml to 1 liter.

SURVEILLANTS

These devices comprise:

  • Oxygen generator supply sensors (voltage and current)
  • Pressure sensing switches,
  • Throughput limiter, adjustable, sealed,
  • Electronical measuring turbine,
  • Photo sensors at UVC-lamp,
  • Magnetic valve.
Operation parameters (UV-intensity, voltage and current of oxygen generator, flow and pressure) are continuously supervised by the electronic control unit. The magnetic valve is normally closed and its opened by electric signal only if all operation parameters are within nominal range. The electronic measuring turbine shows the actual and the cumulative flow rate, serving therefore also as a base for account purposes.

CONTROLLING

Separate main fuses for pump [10 A] and UV electronics, transformer, rectifier and control unit. Control and supervision by microcomputer unit, display of operation status by alphanumeric display (2 lines of 16 characters) and 4 pilot lamps. Malfunction and insufficient values are signaled by blinking the red pilot lamp and are displayed on the display. The plant does not start up. If the initial check was correct, plant enters STANDBY status, signaled by white pilot lamp. Normal operation is signaled by green pilot light. While the UVC-lamp warms up (intensity 51 to 70 %) the yellow pilot light is on. This warm-up has to be finished in less than 4 minutes. If not, the yellow pilot light signals necessary maintenance.
If malfunctions occur during operation, this is signaled by blinking the red pilot light and the plant is shut down automatically. By pressing the button the cause is shown on the display and the lamp is steady red.
The control unit interrogates internal states and sensors periodically: if - then.
